Skukuza – South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that summer holiday bookings for a number of their parks will be opening on Thursday.

They will be allowing guests to book for the period of December 2014 to January 2015.

SANParks General Manager: Sales and Marketing, Bheki Zwane said the reason for opening both months at the same time is to make it easy for customers to plan their itinerary into the new year with just one booking, unlike in previous years where they had to book separately for December and January.

He said accommodation bookings in various national parks are always in demand during this peak period, which often leaves holidaymakers disappointed for not securing desired accommodation. “Holiday makers must be mindful that available inventory in all parks will be made available on a first come first serve basis,” he said.

Zwane said the 2013 festive season looked good for the entire organisation with an average 77.4% occupancy for accommodation and average 66% occupancy for camping.

The top 6 Parks with highest unit occupancies were for the past season were as follows:

- West Coast 97.8%
- Addo Elephant 93.6%
- Karoo 93.1%
- Camdeboo 87.0%
- Garden Route 86.8%
- Kgalagadi 85.8% and
- Kruger at 80.2%.

A total of 692 498 guests visited different national parks during December 2013.

- Table Mountain with 333 090 guests,
- Kruger 180 328,
- Garden Route 63 414,
- West Coast 35 852
