Swerve out for a hippo, land in a river - SANParks staff find out the hard way

2014-06-05 12:48
Skukuza - Two SANParks staff members were trapped on a bridge over night when they had to swerve to avoid a hippo blocking the road, and their vehicle landed in the Letaba river.

Beeld reports that one of the staff members was ill and needed to be transported to a hospital in Phalaborwa.

According to SANParks spokesperson, Gabrielle Venter, they had received permission to enter the park gates after closing time.

They were on their way home when they unexpectedly came across a hippo blocking the road on the Letaba bridge. In an effort to avoid hitting the animal, the driver swerved and lost control of the Toyota Hilux bakkie, which overshot the side of the bridge and fell about 2.5 metres down into the river.

Fortunately neither was injured.
