Table Mountain Cableway breaks record

2013-08-05 15:06
Cape Town – Table Mountain Cableway remains an ultimate choice for local and foreign tourists - made evident by a record breaking year for annual visitors.

The Cableway said in a statement that 855 000 visitors had visited the iconic mountain in the past financial year and that the company has been presented with the South African National Park’s Cape Regional Business Partner of the Year Award.

Sabine Lehmann, the managing director of the Table Mountain Cableway Company, said the fact that the Cableway has set this record is simply because of Table Mountain’s inauguration into the New 7 Wonders of Nature hall of fame last year following a worldwide campaign.

“The accolade has generated enormous interest not only from international visitors, but also domestic travelers who have made use of the many special offers aimed at locals,” Lehmann said.

SANPark’s Cape Region General Manager Gary de Kock said the Cableway deserved to win the SANPark’s Cape Regional Business Partner of the Year Award for professionalism in the manner in which the project is run.

“We chose Table Mountain Cableway as our Business Partner of the Year for their innovation in improving standards in environmental and tourism management. The Cableway is passionate about conserving Table Mountain’s biodiversity and over the years has set new levels in reducing their impact on mountain ecology, while managing in excess of 855 000 visitors per annum,” said de Kock.

The Cableway has been operational for 84 years and recorded the highest number of visitors in 2007 which remains the country’s biggest tourism year thus far.
