Table Mountain Cableway re-opens after 5-weeks

Cape Town – The Table Mountain Cableway will re-open after a 5-week shutdown due to maintenance.

The cableway which allows you to gain entry into the iconic Table Mountain is due to resume its operations on Monday the 26th of August. The closure comes after a required annual maintenance to meet the highest global cableway standards as set out by the Swiss Governing Body for Cableways (BAV).

Throughout the extended 5-week maintenance period, the main direct current drive was replaced with an alternating current drive. Two carriages including the mechanism that moves the cable car up and down the track have been overhauled (every six years) as well as the replacement of the heel rope.

The cableway also took the opportunity to improve the visitor experience by providing a new deck for additional seating for kiosk patrons and erected the visitor centre at the lower station.

The re-opening of the cableway immediately follows after the announcement of the record breaking 855 000 visits during the last financial year, a record that was set six years ago.

If you celebrated your birthday during the closure period, the cableway entitles you to redeem your complimentary birthday. The offer stands from the week after the annual maintenance, August 26 until the 1st of September 2013 and you must produce your South African Identity document to claim your ticket.
