Weekend snowfall could affect travel plans

2014-07-04 09:18
Cape Town - Heavy snowfall has been predicted for the mountainous regions of the Western and Northern Cape, as a strong cold front makes its way over South Africa this weekend.

Weather services has issues a warning that snowfall could affect travel plans significantly, especially for motorists planning to make use of mountain passes.

So, If you have plans to travel this weekend, best keep an eye on the weather

The City of Cape Town has also put all emergency services on high alert for the weekend, with warnings of heavy rain (that could result in localised flooding in places over the Cape Metropole, Overberg, Cape Winelands and South-Western Cape District) and gale force winds.

On a lighter note, Capetonians may be happy to note that snowfall is still predicted for Table Mountain.

(Last time we said there would be snow on Table Mountain it didn't happen, leading to major disappointment all round. Sorry about that.)

But this time, we're happy to announce that our report earlier this week about snowfall hitting Table Mountain this weekend still seems to be spot on.

Although Snow Report originally reported that there could be up to 11cm of snow on the Cape Town icon, more recent reports suggest a more conservative 2 - 5cm.

Which is still pretty exciting, no?

Check out this video blog by weatherman Derek van Damme (who happens to be ending off his eTV and eNCA career with a stormy bang on Friday) for the latest about the effect of the front.
