Based on a poll in our Top ten road trips of world, we asked readers to vote for the local drives they love. With so many routes (wine routes, whale routes, owl routes, battlefield routes!) we really are spoiled for choice. To prevent yourself form pulling an unhappy U-turn or making distraught doughnuts when you can't decide which path is best, stop stressing and let your car tell you where she would like to go...

The Garden Route (with 41% of the votes) - VW Beetle

Surf's up!

Clutch in. Choke out. Turn the key once. Turn the key twice. Wait...a...minute...and, finally!

Your car isn't today's child anymore. Much like Madonna, people look at it and think its days are numbered. But also like the Queen of pop, it just won't die! She seems presentable (sometimes even sexy for such an old thing) and keeps on churning out road trip hits faithfully with no signs of slowing down. The Garden Route is by no means an exclusively cheap holiday, but it is filled with those youngens coming to experience the thrills of an old favourite, like a virgin, by making use of what wheels they have.

The Panorama Route (with 21% of the votes) - A 4x4 of your choice

Oil? Check. Tyre pressure? Check. Customized canopy? Anodised Aluminium 8-piece Tarp set? Undergard? And Car-baterry connected Fridge? Check, Check and uhm, Check?

This one is for the guys who don't mind getting their hands dirty and like to get in touch with nature in a real way - not in the ‘luxury tent camp' way. "Everything but nothing, nothing but everything is there motto" - although without their trusty 4x4 gear their trips would probably just be nothing! Look out for those who don khaki shirts and shorts as they revel in the smell of burning elephant dung, chilled mornings in the Kruger Park and the mud from the trails at God's Windows.

Midlands Meander (with 10 % of the votes) - Mini Cooper

Oh my deity. There are so many "cute little alternative" places along here that Dullstroom and all the other routes can go eat their hearts out! Some call it pretentious, but for you and your Mini there is really no better place to get in touch with nature. Being able to see unique woodland crafts and eat savoury pancakes at a fireplace, and ‘shop till you drop' in one scenic and indie holiday is your idea of roughing it. Don't forget your Jackie O sunglasses though - stops include Cleopatra's boutique getaway, Tsonga shoes and handbags and the linen loft, you dare not be seen without your glasses!

The Golden Gate to Clarens (with 8% of the votes) - '4x4' family wagons

"Wake up! You are going to miss it! WAKE UP!", "Don't make me come back there!" or "Are we there yet?" might be what make this trip more memorable than the stunning views of the escarpment. Crowded cars, awkward teenagers and bouncy infants will be sure to make this a trip to remember, hopefully for the scenery also.

The beauty and serenity of the Golden Gate drive to Clarens is a favourite with families hoping to expose their kiddies to the stunning beauty of our country. A hatchback "4x4" is all we need. Nothing but something, something but nothing is there motto? (I don't think it works as well as with the hardcore 4x4 guys) but the point is you can go get your hands a little dirty, but still take your wife, kids and a few home comforts with - like a little nightcap to take the edge off.

Whale Route (with 8% of the votes) - Mid life crisis sportscar

okay, maybe a little much...

The Western Cape is hardly known for its affordability. Those who venture there have dreamed of the fabulous life -some were born into it, sadly most weren't. These guys spent their youth chasing the capitalist dream and are only now able to reap the rewards. Look out for plenty of older men with a form-fitting pink shirt, a motorcycle or even an earring! Exclusive holiday homes with the crisis-mobiles in the garages make this the perfect spot for society's fat cats to enjoy the beauty of nature's biggest. This is midlife crisis central, and hey that isn't a bad thing. Isn't fifty the new thirty?

Wine Route (with 6% of the votes) - A driver

Uhm, we can't condone drinking and driving, so either saddle yourself up with a priest or get a driver. If you want to sample the amazing wines of this beautiful region properly, there really is no two ways about it. Plus if you can get him or her to dress up in that little hat and jacket, why, it will help you fit in with all the farm owning elite, like the Ruperts and Oppenheimers. Arrive alive (or intoxicated).
