Gynaecological bilharzia remains undiagnosed by most doctors in SA

15 October, 07:57 AM

We speak to Dr. Eyrun Kjetland about gynaecological bilharzia. She tells us why this type of bilharzia remains undiagnosed by doctors in SA.

Gynaecological bilharzia is contracted in the same way as bilharzia as we know it, by swimming in affected bodies of fresh water, but many doctors in SA misdiagnose the disease as an STD.

Over 42 million women in Africa and an estimated 2 million in South Africa have sustained damage to their genitals as a result of bilharzia, Dr. Kjetland tells us how the University of Kwazulu Natal and the World Health Organisation are working to educate doctors to be able to detect the disease at an early stage.

Dr. Kjetland gives us a background on the bilharzia disease here: publishes all comments posted on articles provided that they adhere to our Comments Policy. Should you wish to report a comment for editorial review, please do so by clicking the 'Report Comment' button to the right of each comment.
