Did you know you could eat the seed of an avocado? We show you how. Watch.

According to LiveStrong.com avocado seeds have been used as medicine for generations, and in South America people eat them to treat inflammation, diabetes and hypertension. The seed contains phenolic compounds which can prevent cancer, cardiovascular disease and other degenerative illnesses.

Although the seed can contain toxins, the website goes on to say that research has found that the seed eaten in low doses is non-toxic, but one should consult a trusted health practitioner before trying to eat the seed.

South African nutritional consultant, Vanessa De Ascencao says she would recommend eating the avocado seed as it is a great source of antioxidants.

"Many of us don’t know that the avocado seeds are edible and in fact make up 70% of the avocado’s nutritional benefits," she says adding that a study showed, "a much higher antioxidant activity and phenolic content than the edible portions."

The tannins in the ground avocado seed have a bitter flavour, One Green Planet recommends that you combine the seed in smoothies or baking with strong flavours to mask the bitterness. Greens, pineapple, banana and cacao will all mask the flavour and allow you to get the maximum health benefits from the seed.
