24 July, 12:53 PM

Award winning South African author Ishtiyaq Shukri was detained for over nine hours and deported from London’s Heathrow Airport last week. Shukri has held permanent British residence since 1997.

His wife is a British citizen. They have been married since 1996.

Shukri was travelling to their London home to join his wife for the summer holidays. He was searched and detained for nine-and-a-half hours by UK border officials.

Shukri joins us via Skype; he speaks to Jerusha Sukhdeo-Raath about his harrowing experience. Watch the video above as Shukri recounts his detention and the suspicion raised about his visits to Yemen where his wife worked as Country Director for Oxfam.

According to Shurki, his treatment is "indicative of the increasing heavy-handedness facing African migrants at UK and EU borders."
