Mandarin in schools will encourage connections with China - education department

The Department of Basic Education confirmed from 2016 learners around the country will be able to learn Mandarin as a school subject. 

We speak to Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga who says Mandarin will allow South Africa students to make study and business connections with China, South Africa's biggest trading partner.

The subject will not be compulsory, instead schools with the capacity to teach the subject will be encouraged to do so. Watch.
