Victims of 'corrective rape' pressured to remain silent by family

21 September, 12:15 PM

Johan Meyer from OUT Well-Being talks about the need for greater protection for the LGBTI community in SA. Watch.

According to the recently held Everyday social justice for LGBTI in SA seminar hosted by the University of Johannesburg, corrective rape seems to be on the rise. Meyer says corrective rape survivors are often made to remain silent by family members who fear for the safety of the victim and the family.

Statistics do not provide a clear picture of the corrective rape issue in South Africa. Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa (OSISA) reports that only 31 lesbian homophobia-linked murders have been reported since 1998 and of those, only two convictions were secured.
