WATCH: Nine hour operation to perform penis transplant

The operation, led by Stellenbosch University’s Division of Urology head Prof Andre van der Merwe, lasted a marathon nine-hours. Watch him explain the procedure behind the first successful penis transplant in the world.

The marathon nine-hour operation was performed on 11 December 2014 at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.

The recipient of the transplant is a 21-year-old man who lost his penis due to severe complications following a traditional circumcision, surgeons say.
