What are the consequences of banning trophy hunting in South Africa?

We speak to Professor Peet Van Der Merwe from North West University, he unpacks some of the consequences that South Africa might face if trophy hunting is banned. Watch.

Although Prof Van Der Merwe is a hunter himself, he says he is against illegal hunting, poaching and unethical hunting techniques. He tells us why if hunting is banned in South Africa specifically, it will result in the loss of thousands of jobs and result in businesses closing down.

Tourism, clothing, taxidermy, fire-arms and the meat industries, are industries that Van Der Merwe says would be affected by a trophy hunting ban. Watch Van Der Merwe tell us about the meat that gets left behind after a trophy hunt, and how the communities in rural provinces benefit from this meat.
