Effects of poaching on KNP rangers

09 September, 10:57 AM

Nonhlanhla Mbatha has been working in the investigative unit for three years, and in that time has processed about 500 crime scenes.

The 35-year-old said she joined the team so she could be actively involved in finding poachers.

“I worked in operations for six months, then I saw that if I don’t do something the rhinos will be finished," she said.

Mbatha is an assistant investigator.

Chief Ranger Nicholus Funda said SANParks has put measures in place to assist rangers with the stress of the job.

"We witnessed some symptoms of stress and reacted quickly, we developed ranger wellness programs," he said.

"There are people that are ready to help them. There are psychologists ready to help."
