Ex-prisoner reflects on joining a number gang behind bars

We speak to Thulani Mabhuti, 31, who was incarcerated for attempted murder and robbery. He has since turned his life around, today he sits down with us to reflect on the time he spent in prison, and tell us why he felt forced to join a number gang behind bars.

Mabhuti had been in and out of prison since he was 15-years-old. He weighs in on his first time in prison, when he joined the 28 gang, out of necessity for survival behind bars. He says he wasn't scared anymore once he joined the gang, the gang offered him protection in prison.

Mabhuti has gone through a program at City Mission, an organisation in Cape Town that dedicates their time to helping ex-prisoners and gang members turn their lives around. Mabhuti now shares his story, to encourage and inspire young men currently in prison to change their lives.
