Father speaks of daughter's gruesome murder in Camps Bay hotel

27 May, 06:09 PM

American marketing executive Gabriela Kabrins Alban was found dead in a Camps Bay hotel suite in 2015.

Her father Howdy, who lives in Los Angeles, recalls hearing the devastating news of his daughter's death from the State Department.

Sitting down with News24's Erin Bates this week, the bereaved parent described his daughter's murder. "It was horrific," he said.

A visibly shaken Kabrins could not put his experiences at the morgue into words. He was tasked with identifying the body of his only child last year.

Kabrins traveled to Cape Town to attend the bail hearing of the man accused of his daughter's murder. Her mother Doris Weitz and stepfather also attended the hearings.

On Tuesday Diego Novella Dougherty, who was dating Kabrins at the time of her death, was denied bail in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court

He stands accused of murdering his American girlfriend, whom he invited to Cape Town to seek alternative therapies to treat Lyme disease.

Speaking to Nick Pawson this week, Dougherty's lawyer William Booth noted his client's history of substance abuse.

Booth also said the defense were considering appealing Engel's ruling of no bail for Dougherty.
