'If you walk alone at night in Khayelitsha you're a target'

11 May, 04:41 PM

Almost two years since a major report on policing in Khayelitsha was filed, the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) is still calling for foot patrols, better lighting and more resources to help police keep residents safe.

Social Justice Coalition (SJC) Community Advocate Nomthetho Kilo says most areas in Khayelitsha are without streetlights and proper paving (instead the sections comprise of narrow passageways).

"If you are alone in the evening you are a target of the criminals," says Kilo. She spoke to News24 Live about the bail application of two men accused of murdering Sinoxolo Mafevuka earlier this year.

Mafevuka was found murdered and dumped in a port-a-loo near the shack she shared with her mother. Kilo, who focuses on security, is monitoring several cases of rape and murder for the SJC.

She adds the Khayelitsha Commission of Enquiry, which filed a damning report in August 2014, cited the lack of resources for police to tackle crime in the sprawling area.

It made several recommendations, including foot patrols and more visible policing.
