Free State paramedic breaks down over alleged assault

30 August, 02:04 PM

Listen as Yvonne Peter speaks to News24 from her hospital bed, three days after she and a tow truck driver had an altercation at the scene of an accident.

She was driving an ambulance to an accident on Mackenzie Road, Bloemfontein on Saturday night. A tow truck was on the same road and that vehicle's driver accused Peter of pushing him off the road.

Peter says the tow truck driver and his wife later assaulted her, tugging at her clothes and pulling her weave from her head. She also alleges the pair repeatedly issued a racial slur at her.

The driver, JP Smit, denied that version of events. Smit told News24's Jeanette Chabalala the paramedic's version of events was "not true" and accused Peter of stabbing his wife with a pen.

"We did not beat her," he said on Monday, 29 August.

An audibly distraught Peter spoke from the hospital bed where she was receiving treatment for headaches, pain in her jaw and abdomen.

A case has been opened at Heidedal police station.

Watch for more. See Chabalala's full report here.
