LISTEN: Mthembu slams absent ANC MPs

23 March, 03:17 PM

New Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu wants more members of his party present on voting days in Parliament. He says some "play truant" or are absent without permission. "We must nip it in the bud," he says.

Mthembu has assumed his post as the new African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip in Parliament. He replaces outgoing Stone Sizani who is taking up a ambassadorial position in Germany.

Mthembu says he plans to meet with different political parties including the leading opposition, the Democratic Alliance (DA), and third in place, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

According to Mthembu, Parliament has become a "soapie" in reference to popular daytime television drams. "That's not what we there for," says Mthembu.

While he insists there are many "wonderful cadres" in the ANC's Parliamentary Caucus, Mthembu wishes to see more members participating in votes.
