Marikana left behind by ANC, claims Maimane

16 August, 02:09 PM

DA leader Mmusi Maimane claims the ANC neglects those who are black, poor and not politically connected.

"There has been no justice for those who have died here in Marikana," he says.

The opposition leader spoke at the four-year commemoration of the Marikana killings in the North West on Tuesday.

He says the Marikana community is emblematic of South African societies in need of change.

Maimane did not provide evidence to support his claims regarding the ANC.

In last months' municipal elections the ANC won 75.9% in Ward 31 which incorporates Karee Mine where 34 mine workers were killed in 2012 (more here).

He also did not have details readily available as to whether or not his party would be contributing to a trust for bereaved families.

"We will make a response appropriately, at the right time. We just want to get hold of details. I will make sure we respond."
