Moments before police, security detain News24 reporter

30 September, 04:06 PM

Watch as News24 reporter Kaveel Singh addresses a police officer at a protest on Friday, moments before he is detained.

"What did you say to me?" asks the officer, who can be identified only by his boots in this video.

Singh explains his right to film police. He was covering a protest at the University of KwaZulu-Natal for this news agency. The officer blocks the lens of Singh's camera during the discussion.

Earlier police fired rubber bullets and teargas to disperse clouds of protesting students. Security were also patrolling campus during Friday's demonstrations.

Singh and a student were detained together. According to a police officer, Singh was arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest.

Colleague Jeff Wicks confirmed with a university spokesperson that journalists in fact were permitted to be on campus.

Student Phindile Dlamini (pictured below) was detained at the same time.
