WATCH: Hermanus resident claims police shot him 5 times with rubber bullets

17 July, 04:11 PM

"I do not know when it’s going to stop, I wish it can stop right now." These are the words from Hermanus resident Siyamthemba Qotyane, who claims he was shot with five rubber bullets during protests in Zwelihle.

Qotyane said he was watching the protest action from the sidelines when he was shot.

Residents of Zwlelihle in the Western Cape are two weeks into a community shutdown. Police have repeatedly used tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters.

The situation turned violent over the weekend following the arrest of a community leader.

Qotyane said he had been on his way to work when he was shot in the face, leg, hand and twice in his back as he ran from police firing rubber bullets.

According to Qotyane, authorities were trying to stop a barrage of stones aimed at the police by protesting youths.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk described the situation as "very volatile".

"Police and other law enforcement agencies will remain in the area until law and order is restored," he said.

Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Colonel Luthando Nosilela told News24 that no one had reported the alleged shooting and that no charges were being investigated at this stage.
