Pistorius backers want UN to step in

04 March, 02:37 PM

International Supporters for Oscar Pistorius have launched an online petition to the United Nations (UN) Commissioner on Human Rights regarding murder his sentence.

Pistorius is currently under house arrest at his uncle's home after serving a term of imprisonment at Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria. He was found guilty of murder in relation to the death of Reeva Steenkamp.

Steenkamp, a model and law graduate, was shot dead through a locked door at Pistorius's Silverwoods Estate home on the night of Valentine's Day in 2013. Lawyers for Pistorius appealed the sentence he received for her death.

On Thursday, 3 March 2016 however the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced it had rejected the appeal. People sympathetic to the athlete have signed an online petition appealing to the UN to intervene.
