Rural children march to the DBE to demand scholar transport

07 October, 11:51 AM

Equal Education held a protest outside the Ministry of Basic Education in Pretoria on Friday, to demand the implementation of the 2015 National Scholar Transport Policy.

"If a scholar is walking more than five kilometres, that learner is eligible to get subsidised scholar transport," said Equal Education's National Organiser Luyolo Mazwembe.

Over 250 scholars from KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng were bussed in to witness the handover of a memorandum to the Department of Basic Education's Deputy Director General responsible for Scholar Transport.

The memorandum demanded evidence of the engagement between the Education Department and National Treasury, in ensuring that the scholar grant is included in the department’s 2018/2019 budget allocation.
