Parts from 83 burnt SANDF vehicles were very valuable - Army chief

20 September, 04:05 PM

SA Army Chief, Lt-General Lindile Yam, held his first media breakfast briefing since assuming his new role.

Yam decried the lack of funding and the state of equipment available to him, in the wake of last week's fire at Wallmannstal that destroyed 83 military vehicles

Addressing the fire at the Wallmannstal Vehicle Depot, he said, "We were looking at the vehicles for parts, because that is what we are doing these days...to cannibalise the BER (Beyond Economic Repair) vehicles to make the other vehicles move."

He added that the burnt vehicles were thus of high value to the army, as the service is in survival mode as far as keeping their old vehicles on the road.

He concluded by saying that the Military Board of Enquiry and the Military Police are still looking into the matter.
