SA'S CRIME STATS: Reasons for the rape statistic decline

02 September, 04:46 PM

Acting Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane suggests why reported rape figures have decreased from last year.

He was responding to questions during a press briefing on the crime statistics from March 2015 to April 2016.

Phahlane suggests the the Criminal Law (Forensic Procedures) Amendment Act - simply, the DNA Act - may be a contributing factor.

He also cites police action on combating sexual offences and apprehending serial offenders as a possible reason.

The police report, presented in parliament, documents the tally of reported crimes.

Some entities, such as the Institute of Security Studies (ISS Africa), think under-reporting may also play a role.
