Soweto hostel leaders meet with local government to discuss safety issues

11 September, 10:06 AM

Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane held a safety engagement session with Izinduna (hostel leadership) from Soweto and West Rand on Sunday.

Safety within the hostels and relations with the surrounding communities was a key topic at the meeting held at the Orlando Police Station.

Finding a workable solution to frequent service delivery strikes by hostel residents, that often result in vandalism of property in the communities surrounding the hostels, was one of the key objectives of the meeting.

"We need to integrate these hostels into the surrounding communities, it’s been more than 20 years since 1994 and we should have done away with hostels by now," ward councillor Sechaba Khumalo told News24.
