Timing is everything when it comes to Zuma's corruption charges

30 April, 01:33 PM

On Friday the North Gauteng High Court ruled former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Mokotedi Mpshe erred when he dropped corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma in 2009.

News24's editor Adriaan Basson, who covered the case then as a Mail & Guardian journalist, recalls the power struggle in the African National Congress (ANC) at the time.

"It was never about the veracity of the charges against Jacob Zuma," says Basson. "Nobody ever doubted there was a case he had to answer for."

Leonard McCarthy and former NPA head Bulelani Ngcuka were speculating about when to time the charges against Zuma, explains Basson. "The issue was always about the timing."
