VIDEO: 'We pay R2 to use mall toilets' – Cape Town informal settlement residents demand basic services

22 November, 04:41 PM

Five Cape Town communities joined with social justice movements to march to the Cape Town Civic Centre on Thursday.

The protesters expressed exasperation over the lack of basic services in informal settlements in the city.

Nosicelo Jacobs, who has been living in the Ses'khona informal settlement in Philippi East for seven months, described how residents collect drinking water from a nearby stream where their livestock also drink.

She also described how residents were forced to pay R2 to use toilets at nearby shopping malls, while those who cannot afford R2 are forced to relieve themselves outside their homes.

Executive director of safety and security for the City of Cape Town Richard Bosman accepted the group's memorandum on behalf of the mayor.
