WATCH: 40 shacks burn down in Joburg as temperatures plummet

05 July, 03:35 PM

More than 20 shacks were destroyed in Alexandra, Johannesburg, on Tuesday in an early morning fire.

A cold front has been sweeping through the country, with South Africans trying to stay warm at all costs.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi told News24 the fire was probably caused by a paraffin stove.

"To date, we have recorded no injuries or fatalities. But we urge our residents to look after their heating devices," he said.

Another 20 shacks in Soweto also caught alight.

Alexandra residents affected by the fire received help from various NGOs in the form of food parcels, blankets and building material.

Mulaudzi said emergency services would remain on high alert for the entire week.
