WATCH: 9-year-old collects tens of thousands of socks for charity this winter

06 July, 04:18 PM

"My goal is to collect a million socks by next year," says ambitious Aaron Greenblatt, 9, who started collecting socks for charity in 2017.

When News24 visited Aaron at his home in Randburg, the tenacious kid philanthropist was packing a new range of special National Basketball Association (NBA) socks he received from the United States.

In a room filled with large boxes of socks, Aaron has an impressive range of baby socks, school socks, sport socks as well as ballet socks and shoes that were donated to him by various organisations.

"He started this all on his own, we are just there to support him," his mother, Lee Greenblatt, said.

The Aaron Rock Your Socks charity was inspired by Sole2Sole, an initiative by another 9-year-old, Dario Gouveia, who collected over 4 000 pairs of shoes.

Aaron realised that those shoes would need socks, and so his initiative was born.

He started out his drive with the simple goal of collecting 1 000 pairs of socks. Today, he has collected over 30 000 pairs to give away.

"We give to various children's homes and old-age homes and work together with different businesses," Lee said.

"Even when we're driving on the road, if we see a homeless person or family, we make sure we keep enough socks in our car to give to them," she said.

News24 joined Aaron on his most recent trip to non-profit youth organisation Dlala Nje in the Johannesburg inner city.

"I'm excited to give them the NBA socks because they are all the way from America," Aaron said.

Aaron joined the Dlala Nje boys on the courts for a quick game of basketball outside the famous Ponte building.

"I am one of the luckiest people in the world to receive actual NBA socks," Excel Mbiyavanga, one of the Dlala Nje kids said.

"It really is a blessing and it makes me happy because this is now motivation for me to improve my game".

Aaron was selected as one of News24's 100 Young Mandelas. See more here.
