WATCH: Audacious thieves steal R10 000 in cash-in-transit robbery

10 September, 04:37 PM

Yet another cash-in-transit robbery has taken place, this time in Johannesburg, after four armed men held up a Fidelity Cash Solutions guard at a filling station in Florida.

The incident took place shortly after midday on Friday at the Shell garage on the corner of Gordon and Ontdekkers roads.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Wayne Minnaar confirmed money was taken from guards who were making a routine collection at the filling station.

"One of the guards were held up at gunpoint as soon as he approached the money van. The perpetrators took two money boxes from him and proceeded to shoot the van's wheels."

Minnaar told News24 that approximately R10 000 was stolen from the guards before the gunmen fled in a Ford Figo that was later spotted in Soweto.

SAPS, metro police praised for vigilance

"JMPD and [the] SAPS (South African Police Service) later engaged in a shootout with the suspects in Dobsonville where one suspect was killed and firearms were confiscated," said Minnaar.

Investigations are still underway to locate the other three suspects who managed to get away.

Fidelity Cash Solutions confirmed in a statement that one of its vehicles was hit while making a routine collection at the filling station.

"Fortunately, there were no major injuries on the scene and Fidelity is working closely with the SAPS to follow up on any leads," Fidelity executive Arthur Gibson said.

National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole praised both the SAPS and the metro police for their vigilance and bravery.

"The positive response by our police officers nationally to these violent crimes since the implementation of the national interventions must be applauded," said Sitole.
