Two men were arrested in Brandfort in the Free State on Saturday night after an alleged confrontation with police officers.

Video footage shows one of the accused, a barman, biting a police officer's finger. The officer then slaps him and points a firearm at him.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo told News24 two constables were attacked while arresting a drunk driver outside the Koffies pub in Voortrekker Street.

Constable Maleke Daniel Moletsane chased one of the accused, Juan Pierre van Vuuren, into the pub, where the altercation seen in the footage took place.

"While they were effecting the arrest, two ... males came out from the bar, attacked the members and bit constable Moletsane's finger," Mbambo said.

Mbambo added Van Vuuren resisted arrest and took out a knife. The knife was confiscated.

The men were charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Van Vuuren was also charged with possession of a dangerous weapon.

Both men were released on R500 bail and the court case was postponed to February 5.

Carla Botha, owner of Koffies pub, told Netwerk24 she was slapped with a R1 500 fine after the incident.

"As the owner, I was fined because someone in my bar had a pocketknife, a dangerous weapon. I have to pay the fine or appear in court in March," she said.

She told Netwerk24 she would be consulting with her lawyer.
