WATCH | President Cyril Ramaphosa to address South Africa on coronavirus

2020-03-23 20:24

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on the coronavirus pandemic on Monday evening. WATCH

Cape Town restaurants and pubs say they are struggling to keep their businesses afloat since the start of the coronavirus outbreak.

At Tony's Roma, a restaurant and pub in Table View, bartender Petro Kumbere told News24: "We start selling beers from 09:00 until 18:00 then the bar closes until the next day."

This is in line with the strict measures President Cyril Ramaphosa announced to curb the spread of the coronavirus in South Africa.

The owner of a Greek restaurant on the Blouberg beachfront said he was struggling to fill seats since the start of the outbreak.

"When the news started filtering through internationally, the number of customers dropped slightly … but after the announcement last week Sunday, we've had about a 95% drop," Dimitri Manousakis told News24.

Ramaphosa has since announced a nationwide lockdown that is set to take effect at 23:59 on Thursday. Restaurants and other establishments will be expected to comply.
