Police have found the owner of the vehicle that was captured on camera spinning and knocking over a pedestrian.

The video shows the car spinning at an intersection in a residential area before it hits a pedestrian.

While the pedestrian remains on the ground, the driver of the vehicle continues with the stunt.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) chief David Tembe later tweeted that he had instructed the Vehicle Tracing Unit to investigate the incident.

The owner of the white VW Golf was traced to Vlakfontein, south of Johannesburg, the JMPD said.

Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said: "They traced the owner to Vlakfontein, who claims that he was not driving. But in terms of the National Road Traffic Act, the owner will be held liable."

Minnaar appealed to the public to come forward with information about the incident.

"No one from the public has told us the condition of the man hit. We are waiting on the community to come forward," he added.

He said the owner of the vehicle would be charged with reckless and negligent driving if he did not reveal who drove the car at the time.

"If the man hit by the car dies, then the owner will also be charged with culpable homicide," Minnaar said.

In addition, the JMPD wants the person who took the video to come forward and give a statement.
