WATCH: Danger hinders EMS staff from lifesaving work

15 September, 10:30 AM

Increasingly, ambulance workers in Cape Town must fear for their own safety when they would rather concentrate solely on saving patients' lives.

Around 200 EMS workers participated in a convoy and march in Philippi on Wednesday, 14 February.

Paramedics told News24 they fear for their safety and have had to abandon rescue efforts in some cases of high danger.

Some have taken up running and boxing in a bit to guard themselves on the job.

Western Cape EMS and Forensic Services spokesperson Robert Daniels said, "They are trying to provide a life-saving service. It really shouldn't be a case of them being fearful for their own lives."

He appealed to communities to assist in keeping EMS staff safe.
