WATCH: De Lille asks, 'Why must I put more money in Constantia?'

10 May, 01:28 PM

"Why must I put more money in Constantia?" asks Patricia de Lille. "They've got everything."

Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate De Lille launched the party's Cape Town manifesto on Tuesday.

She scorned the African National Congress (ANC) and critics who, in her words, were "in nappies" while she was fighting apartheid.

"If the ANC can put forward a plan to counter a DA plan, but in the absence of such a plan it's just a lot of hot air that is coming out and I hope they will learn from the mistakes they've made in previous elections," she adds.

De Lille effectively characterised her party as a political Robin Hood, who takes from the rich on the Atlantic Seaboard and gives to the poor.

"We are charging the rich people to live in their houses [...] and we then use that money to cross-subsidise services to the poor."

Recently the DA-run government in the Western Cape landed in hot water over the planned sale of city land in Sea Point.

The property used to house Tafelberg Remedial High School was sold to Phyllis Jowell Jewish Day School but that sale was halted.

Reclaim the City campaign represented by the Ndifuna Ukwazi Law Centre went to court to halt the transfer and to demand reasons for the decision to sell.

The matter is again open to public comment.
