The Emfuleni Local Municipality confirmed that an explosion occurred at the Town Main Substation situated in Curie Boulevard in Vanderbijlpark on Tuesday last week.

The resulting fire at the station led to power outages in several areas in Vanderbijlpark, including Stephanopark, Bonanne, parts of NW7, the Vanderbijlpark Water Tower, Bophelong Ext 1 to 18, and CW areas 1 to 6.

Eskom was aware of a municipal substation that blew up in Vanderbijlpark on Tuesday afternoon, spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said in a tweet.

Phasiwe said the municipality was investigating the cause of the explosion and that Eskom would assist in helping to restore power supply
