WATCH: Fleeing suspects crash into cop vehicle in PE

04 March, 01:17 PM

An armed robbery came to a screeching halt in Gelvan Park, Port Elizabeth, when suspects on the run crashed into an unmarked police vehicle. Watch.

According to HeraldLive.co.za, the accident happened at the intersection of Gail and Stanford roads shortly after 8am on Thursday.

Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said eight suspects (in a blue Isuzu bakkie that had been reported stolen in Humewood last month) had just robbed a British American Tobacco (BAT) delivery vehicle at gunpoint less than one kilometre away and fled towards Stanford road.

The suspects rear-ended an unmarked police bakkie with two detectives inside while skipping a red light. On impact at the intersection, the police vehicle rolled and hit two other cars.

The suspects then allegedly grabbed some of the boxes of cigarettes, and fled into nearby bushes.

Nelson Mandela Bay EMS operations manager, Ashwell Botha, said the detectives and the drivers of the two vehicles that were hit during the collision were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
