WATCH: Hundreds join mass meeting over fees at UCT

19 September, 05:27 PM

Well over 200 students participated in mass meeting at the University of Cape Town on Monday afternoon.

Minister of Higher Education and Training's Blade Nzimande announced the fee increases for 2017 during a briefing on tertiary education fudning at 11:00.

He said universities should determine their own increases of no more than 8 percent.

The UCT students demonstrated over fees and job losses prompted by insourcing select services on campus (such as catering and document centre positions).

Attendees heard a list of demands from students and workers.

The organisers also demanded students associated with the Rhodes Must Fall movement (who were suspended earlier this year for violent conduct) be allowed back on campus, hence the tag #BringBackOurCadres.
