08 March, 03:57 PM

In a statement, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged South Africans to use the day to reflect on what they can do to advance all aspects of gender equality.  The president said South Africans should dedicate International Women’s Day 2018 to the memory of the late Albertina Sisulu.

Sisulu was an anti–apartheid activist who dedicated her life to the struggle; her centenary is being celebrated this year.

“We have a responsibility to the memory of Ma Sisulu and to the many women who walked alongside her to intensify the struggle for gender equality in all areas of life,” said Ramaphosa.

A 2015 report by the Women in the Workplace research programme at the University of Johannesburg, indicated that women in South African earn 15% - 17% less than men.
