WATCH: Is the NPA done with Pravin Gordhan?

31 October, 03:54 PM

On Monday NDPP Shaun Abrahams announced the NPA had decided to backtrack on charges of fraud and theft against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Abrahams said that the three former Sars employees - Gordhan, Ivan Pillay and Oupa Magashula - the NPA intended to prosecute over Pillay's early retirement in 2009.

"I am satisfied that Mr Magashula, Mr Pillay and minister Gordhan did not have the requisite intention to act unlawfully,"he told reporters in Pretoria on Monday.

That case is no longer active, but does this mean the NPA will leave Gordhan alone to do his work at Finance Minister? In short: we do not yet know.

When a resolute Abrahams announced the decision to charge Gordhan and company on 11 October he also said the NPA was investigating a separate matter: the so-called rogue unit at Sars.

DA MP and former NPA prosecutor Glynis Breytenbach has advised Abrahams and the NPA to carefully consider the facts before pursuing another case against Gordhan.

News24's Erin Bates has requested comment from two NPA media personnel on the status of that matter. We will provide an update when they reply.

Update around 18:00 on Monday, 31 October: NPA spokesperson Bulelwa Makeka replied to News24 in an email.

"The NDPP indicated during his briefing this morning that the status remained the same, in that the Hawks were still investigating," wrote Makeka.
