WATCH: Lanseria baggage handler to be rewarded for sterling job at carousel

16 September, 01:59 PM

Every single piece of luggage that rolls past Ephraim Sibeko on the carousel at Lanseria International Airport is carefully maneuvered to be right side up with the handle pointing outward. All you have to do, is step up and grab what's yours.

"I watched him in absolute awe," said Janine Brand who took a video of Sibeko at the baggage carousel going about his business with gusto.

"I travel a lot. I have been to some of the most popular airports in the world, but I have never seen something like this," said Brand.

Brand was travelling from Cape Town on the evening of September 5, when she noticed Sibeko at the carousel.

"I was just so amazed at his work ethic in doing that. No degree or form of education can teach you that."

Brand later walked up to him and thanked him for what he did.

"He was just so humble and so shy. He just smiled at me and said: 'Thank you'."

She later made it her mission to make sure that his employers acknowledged his work.

"I had to download Twitter just so I could message the relevant people. A little while later, Lanseria messaged me back acknowledging him for his work ethic."

According to his supervisor, Sibeko has been working at the airport since 2012, but his work ethic even surprised his employers.

"He really went the extra mile. We have never seen this before. But after it all blew up, we decided that this is the kind of work ethic we want to instil in all the other guys as well," said Luckson Makhuvha, Bidvest Protea Coin's branch manager.

Makhuvha said Sibeko would be rewarded for his efforts, but the contents of his reward were still being decided.

"He will also receive a medal later in the year, at our medal parade, for his work."
