WATCH | Melville and Newtown shootings not linked at this stage - Lesufi

2020-01-03 19:51

Acting Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi told journalists on Friday that two deadly New Year's Day shootings cannot be linked at this stage.

Two women were killed, and six others injured during a drive-by shooting at Poppy's restaurant in Melville. An unknown gunman also shot at unsuspecting revellers at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, leaving 11 people wounded.

"Thus far the two incidents … it cannot be said they are related," Lesufi said.

He added this could change once the police have finalised their investigations.

"But for now, they are not related."

Lesufi said the authorities were close to a breakthrough in the investigation into the Melville shooting.

"The police are convinced … that they are about to crack this case in terms of the information they have gathered and the relevant people who provided information."

Speaking at Helen Joseph Hospital during a visit to the victims of the shooting, Lesufi said the black BMW SUV that drove past the restaurant and opened fire on patrons was a "cloned car".
