WATCH: Men steal ceremonial mace from Nigeria's National Assembly

19 April, 03:35 PM

The Nigerian Senate had its mace and symbol of authority forcibly removed while it was in session on Wednesday.

This resulted in the Senate president having to adjourn proceedings until a spare mace could be brought into the house.

Senator for Delta Central, Ovie Omo-Ageng, has been accused of being behind the incident following his suspension from the house.

"I was never arrested!!! I merely left with the Police who wanted to hear my perspective on the matter. Told them my perspective and left immediately after." - The Senator posted on his official twitter account following word of his arrest.

This was not the first time that such an incident has befallen the Nigerian Senate. In 2000 then Senate president Chuba Okadigbo removed the symbol of authority for a number of weeks ostensibly to prevent his impeachment from the house.

The Nigerian Guardian has since reported the recovery of the stolen mace.
