Johannesburg emergency services spent hours trying to contain a fire that broke out in a glue and paper factory in Kya Sands, Johannesburg, on Wednesday morning.

The raging fire engulfed the entire factory, causing the roof to collapse. According to Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Nana Radebe, they were alerted to the fire at 05:30.

"We deployed four fire engines around the factory to extinguish the fire. Thankfully, nobody was inside when the fire started, resulting in no injuries or fatalities."

Radebe, who was on the scene, said further investigations were necessary to determine the cause of the fire.

Speaking to News24, property owner Trent Saldsman estimated the damage at R20m.

"The workers here were turned back this morning. We are looking to hopefully find alternative premises for them to continue operating in," said Saldsman.

The fire was not yet contained by late Wednesday afternoon.
