WATCH: Northern Cape protesters force truck carrying manganese to dump load

30 November, 04:26 PM

Service delivery protesters forced a truck carrying manganese to dump its load in the road in the middle of Barkly West in the Northern Cape on Tuesday.

Soné de Bruyn, owner of River North Carriers, told News24 that the rioting protesters forced the truck driver to dump his cargo onto the R31, which passes through the town.

"We were able to recover the cargo the next day," De Bruyn added.

De Bruyn said trucks were targeted weekly in the area.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sergio Kock confirmed that about 150 people were involved in a service delivery protest when the incident happened at around 11:00 on Tuesday.

"No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made yet," he said.

"The situation in Barkly West is currently calm, however police are still monitoring the situation."
