WATCH: Onlookers cheer after cash-in-transit van explodes

28 November, 11:59 AM

A strange video posted online shows onlookers appearing to cheer, as a Fidelity cash-in-transit van explodes in Sebokeng, Vereeniging.

The video has since gone viral on Facebook and shows the van, which appears to be stuck on the road, go up in plumes of smoke.

Vereeniging police spokesperson, Captain Fikile Funda, said two Fidelity guards were driving the vehicle towards a U-save supermarket to pick up some cash last Thursday, when they were met by a hail of bullets from men parked outside the supermarket.

"While the Fidelity guards were making their escape, the men who had fired at them, shot at the guards tyres and they could no longer drive," said Funda.

"At that moment the two guards opened their doors in order to flee from the car, because they were being fired at from all angles."

In the video, an explosion is heard, while a plume of white smoke surrounds the van.

The two Fidelity guards were taken to hospital in a critical condition.

"One of the cars deployed to look for the robbers received a tip-off, which led police to a house where firearms were recovered," Funda added.

Upon further investigation, police also found that all the cars used in the heist had been stolen earlier in the week.

No further injuries were reported. Investigations are ongoing.

Fidelity Group CEO Wahl Bartmann said the increase in the number of CIT bombings in recent months is unacceptable and points sharply to the lack of control over explosives.

"We need the Government to clamp down sharply on anyone found in illegal possession of explosives”, said Bartmann.

"We know that syndicates perpetrating these kinds of crimes are highly skilled and organised".

Fidelity is evolving its technology and changing procedures to stay one step ahead of the criminals.

"Unfortunately the increase in crime, coupled with high unemployment is impacting on the number of robberies and heists,” said Bartmann.
