WATCH: Owner hauls would-be thief out of his bakkie

18 June, 03:10 PM

A Durban man who confronted two would-be car thieves trying to steal his bakkie has told News24 he is grateful they did not have a firearm.

The incident, which was caught on CCTV, shows Darren Nades, 27, rushing out and hauling one of the men from his vehicle.

The incident happened on Friday morning in Morningside.

Nades, an engineer, told News24 he just reacted when he saw the men in his bakkie outside his employer's office.

"I didn't think it through when I stepped out of the gate," he admits.

According to Nades, his fishing gear and tackles had been stolen from the back of the bakkie on a previous occasion at the same location.

"That's when we had a camera installed outside, with a monitor on the inside," he explained.

Vehicle was locked

Nades said their receptionist spotted the two men and raised the alarm.

"I didn't realise they were after the bakkie, I thought they were after something valuable on the inside," Nades said.

He said the vehicle was locked.

"As you can see in the video the hazards are flashing, which shows the alarm was activated, but these guys disconnected the sound to the alarm."

"They actually had the ignition stripped in under a minute. If I had given them five seconds more, the vehicle would have been gone," he said.

"You could actually start the car with a screwdriver, with the amount of damage that has been done."

The vehicle is currently with assessors who are calculating the extent of the damage.

Lucky they didn't have a gun

Nades said he opened an incident report at the Malvern SAPS on Friday, after police officers failed to arrive at the scene.

He says there was no verbal exchange between him and the two thieves.

And when one of the men came at him wielding a spanner, he retreated back into the property.

The man then retrieved something from the vehicle before running away.

It isn't clear what he came back for.

Nades told News24 he's doing well after the incident.

"I'm good, but it was playing on my mind over the weekend. I have my own family with two little ones and if they had a gun, this could have been a completely different outcome."
