WATCH: Police chopper corners home robber on N1

24 October, 01:17 PM

Motorists on the N1 south in Johannesburg had their commute interrupted on Thursday as police flooded the motorway to arrest a fleeing house robber.

Captain Mavela Masondo, South African Police Service spokesperson, told News24 that police received a call about a house robbery in Honeydew.

He said police were told that two men had entered the home and stole cellphones, jewellery and a grey Hyundai i10.

Police then received a tip that a Hyundai fitting the description of the stolen vehicle in Honeydew had been spotted on the N1 near the Garsfontein off-ramp.

"The police started to chase the car and backup was called – a chopper," said Masondo.

The suspect abandoned the car and ran on foot into a nearby bush, but was soon cornered, and an arrest was made.

Masondo said the suspect was charged with robbery and for being in possession of a stolen vehicle.

He appeared in court on Friday and is still in police custody.

Police are looking for any information that could lead to the arrest of the second suspect.
